PATTERSON — The Patterson Lumberjacks used a big fourth quarter to pull away from Assumption for a 66-59 win Friday.
For the first three quarters, Patterson and Assumption played each other close as the Lumberjacks led 9-6 after the first quarter, while Assumption closed its deficit to one at 26-25 at halftime.
By the end of the third quarter, Assumption had a 42-39 lead before Patterson outscored the visitors from Napoleonville 27-17 in the final period.
“This was not one of our better games,” Patterson head coach Ryan Taylor said. “We had several breakdowns defensively. But give Assumption credit. They made the plays and hurt us when we broke down. I was pleased that the guys fought through the struggles and found a way to win the game.”
Nehemiah Augustus led three Patterson players in double figures with 21 points, while Taylan Grogan and Jedrick Gunner added 16 and 12 points, respectively.
Other top contributors included Daylon Charlot, seven; and Dontrell Benjamin, six.
With the win, Patterson improves to 8-1 on the season.
In junior varsity action, Patterson won 42-32.
The squad was led by Terrence Singleton’s 11 points and nine more from Bryce Beaubouef.
Patterson (8-1) will return to action Tuesday when it travels to Houma to face Ellender (14-3) in a non-district contest. While the Patriots have dropped their last three contests — two of those against higher classification opponents — the squad had started the season 14-0.
Ascension Catholic
beats Berwick
Berwick couldn’t keep pace with Ascension Catholic as the Panthers fell 58-40 in Donaldsonville Saturday.
While the score was knotted at 9 following the first quarter, Ascension Catholic held the upper hand in scoring the next three quarters as it led 24-18 at halftime and 43-26 after three quarters.
Audwin Williams led the Panthers with 20 points, while Brandon Naverro had 10.
Other top contributors included Tyvon Batiste, six; and Tré Matthews, four.
The Panthers (6-7) will return to action Tuesday when they travel to Baldwin to face West St. Mary. Junior varsity action will be followed by girls’ varsity at 6:30 p.m. and boys’ varsity at 7:30 p.m.
