Hurricane season

Members of The Confraternity of Our Lady Star of the Sea gathered Sunday afternoon with the Our Lady Star of the Sea statue on Brashear Avenue to pray for the protection for the community by asking the “Blessed Mother” to intercede. The first prayer session at the statue was held Aug. 22, 1979. The Rev. Kerketta Noas of Sacred Heart Catholic Church officiated at the ceremony. Sunday marked the official close of the six-month Atlantic hurricane season, making it the ninth season without a major storm to hit Florida. The National Hurricane Center recorded eight named storms in the Atlantic this year, six of them hurricanes, but none made landfall in Florida. Though the season was quiet, the hurricane center said forecasters were still able to use new tools that could improve track and intensity predictions. Meantime, the eastern North Pacific hurricane season was its busiest since 1992, with 20 named storms.
