Girl Scouts invite families to fall festival, duck derby

The Girl Scouts Louisiana East invites families for a day of activities planned at Camp Whispering Pines from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 29.
The J. Low’s Fall Festival and Duck Derby, named for Girl Scout’s founder Juliette Gordon Low whose birthday falls on Halloween, is a fundraiser benefiting the council’s three camp properties, Camp Whispering Pines, Camp Covington and Camp Marydale. Camp Whispering Pines is located at 56535 Hwy. 1054 in Independence.
Hundreds of plastic ducks will race in a series of heats beginning at 11 a.m. with prizes going to winners of each heat.
“The winner of the grand prize may select either a $200 American Express gift card or $500 of Girl Scout ‘duck dough’ which can be used for camp, programs and shop items for Girl Scout members,” said Jill Pollard, chief development officer, program and properties.
According to Pollard, Fall Festival activities include face painting, archery and crafts, hayrides, climbing the camp’s 40-foot rock wall, canoeing, kayaking and more. There will also be hotdogs and soft drinks available.
The winner needs not be present to win, and the minimum entrance fee for the festival is $25 for three ducks and four festival tickets. There are various adoption packages available from $25 to $100 (16 ducks and 20 fest tickets). Pre-registration is requested by Oct. 16 but will be accepted the day of the event.
