Jeanerette Museum to host Cajun music history talk, music

Jeanerette Bicentennial Museum will present “A Journey Through the History of Cajun Music” at 6 p.m. on Oct. 22. Chris Segura and Michael Martin, archivist and director (respectively) of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s Center for Louisiana Studies, will discuss the history of Cajun music from the earliest examples to the most recent innovations. They will use archival recordings contained in the Center’s archive of Cajun and Creole folklore, as well as present a live performance.
Segura, at ULL graduate, became the Center’s archivist in 2011. He is a founding member of Grammy-nominated Feufollet, and is a member of the Lafayette Rhythm Devils, according to the museum’s news release. Segura has an extensive knowledge of the Cajun music repertoire and the local musicians from years past.
He has digitized approximately 5,000 hours of Cajun music according to IASA standards and oversees all other digitization projects taking place at the Center.
Martin holds the Cheryl Courrégé Burguières/Board of Regents professorship in history at ULL. His research interests focus on 20th-century Louisiana,
