New officers organize January St. Mary AARP meeting

On Jan. 6, St Mary AARP held its regular meeting at the St. Mary Senior Citizens Center in Morgan City. This was the first meeting to be organized and run by the new 2014-15 officers and board members.
President Curtis Leonard chaired the meeting with AnnEtta Lombardo leading off with prayer. Special patriotic singer Hubert Francis performed the national anthem.
Despite the cold weather, members turned out for a meal of meat sauce spaghetti sponsored by Lirette Ford Lincoln Mercury. The crew of Pat Fryer, and Myrt and Mac McNemar prepared the meal. Ronnie Lirette spoke to members following the meal.
In business news, members were reminded that the next dance is on Jan. 25. Music will be by “Anytime Band.” The dance is open to the public as well as members. Tickets are $8 in advance and $12 at the door.
St. Mary AARP will be holding is annual Mardi Gras Court and Ball on Feb. 8. Tickets are available through the St. Mary AARP office and by calling 985-384-2277.
The organization’s membership drive will end Jan. 31. There is still time to renew membership or join. Cost is $10 for a 2-year term. To see the many benefits of being a St. Mary AARP member go to the website www.stmary aarp.com.
Other announcements to the members included:
—Bingo 11 a.m. every Wednesday with lunch available.
—Chapter meal 6 p.m. Jan. 27 at the Forrest Restaurant in Franklin. Tickets are $12 at the AARP office.
—Safe Driving Course Feb. 18, limited to the first 20 people to sign up.
—Volunteers needed to help cook monthly meeting meals.
The next St. Mary AARP meeting is Feb. 3. A meal of chili, crackers and king cake will be served. Meal sponsors are Twin City Funeral Home and Patterson State Bank. The team of Floyd and Shirley Hymel will cook.
