Accident on La. 87 kills 1, critically injures passenger

A vehicle crash on La. 87 near Eastwood Subdivision took the life of a Charenton woman Sunday.
Franklin Fire Chief Chuck Bourgeois reported that the department responded to a 4:38 p.m. call near Briarwood Drive. They arrived to find a two-vehicle accident with victims trapped in both vehicles.
Aid was called from Centerville, Baldwin and Chitimacha personnel and all victims were extricated from the vehicles. They were given medical care until Acadian Ambulance arrived.
Bourgeois said three patients, a mother and two children, were air lifted to Lourdes Hospital in Lafayette for treatment of non-life threatening injuries and one victim was air lifted to Lafayette General hospital with critical injuries.
One victim was deceased at the scene. Louisiana State Police reported to local media that the driver, Teala M. Bernard, 33, of Charenton, allegedly crossed the centerline and struck another vehicle driven by Roni Landry, 26, of Franklin.
Bernard was wearing a seatbelt but was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Mary Parish Coroner’s Office. An adult passenger in Bernard’s vehicle, Landry and two children in her vehicle, were all properly restrained. The passenger in Bernard’s vehicle, Aaren D. Brown, of Jeanerette, was in critical condition.
State Police report that impairment is suspected of being contributing factor in the crash. A toxicology sample was obtained from Bernard by the Coroner’s Office and will be submitted for analysis in order to determine the level of impairment.
The crash is under investigation.
