Accused rapist to have sanity hearing

A 22-year-old Bayou Vista man charged with the attempted rapes of two girls is the subject of a sanity hearing scheduled Monday, while his 67-year-old grandfather originally charged with raping one of the girls, was not indicted by a grand jury in the case Jan. 23.
Corey Adams, 22, of Bayou Vista, who was arrested Nov. 12 by St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s detectives, and originally charged with the aggravated rapes of an 11-year-old girl and a 16-year-old girl, will have a sanity hearing Monday in the 16th Judicial District Court.
Because aggravated rape carries a sentence of either life imprisonment or capital punishment, the case must be brought to a grand jury, 16th Judicial District Assistant District Attorney Erica Rose said.
Adams’ defense brought up issues concerning his sanity, which is why a sanity commission was formed, she said. The sanity commission was formed March 14, according to court documents.
On Feb. 5, Rose decided to file charges on two counts of attempted aggravated rape based on issues of sanity, Rose said.
According to the affidavit, on Oct. 5, the 11-year-old victim was brought to Franklin Foundation Hospital. The victim said Adams raped her twice and that she had been bound and gagged. She said Adams threatened her with additional rapes if she told anyone, according to the affidavit.
Also on Oct. 5, the 16-year-old victim was brought to Franklin Foundation Hospital and said Adams had raped and threatened her with further rapes if she told anyone. She said Adams also threatened to harm another child, according to the affidavit.
Rodney Adams, 67, of Bayou Vista, who was originally charged with the aggravated rape of the 11-year-old girl, went before a grand jury Jan. 23, which came back with a finding of no-true bill, Rose said. That no-true means Rodney Adams was not indicted, Rose said.
Rodney Adams is Corey Adams’ grandfather, St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office Spokeswoman Traci Landry said in November.
