Chitimacha student wins DARE honors
Louisiana DARE Officers Association members held their annual training week conference in Pineville July 21-25.
During the conference awards are given including the overall DARE essay winner.
This year AnaLaysha Burgess, a student at Chitimacha Tribal School, was selected as the Overall 2014 DARE Essay Winner. Her DARE officer is Detective Sgt. Jada Breaux of the Chitimacha Tribal Police Department.
The state of Louisiana is divided into nine districts in which each district then selects an essay winner as its student to represent the district and move up to compete for the state honor.
Burgess was chosen as the Evangeline district winner in May.
The DARE essay is part of the 10-week DARE program that is taught throughout parishes in the state of Louisiana that students complete before their graduation. Thousands of essays are written by students across the state sharing their personal experience in DARE and what they have learned.
