City acts to meet tax fall head-on

Franklin City Council members approved introduction of an ordinance and passage of a resolution aimed at reducing city finances in light of drastic sales tax collection declines.
The council introduced an ordinance Tuesday to change the rate of water use by customers to $7 per 1,000 gallons.
They also approved a resolution cutting the pay of all employees by 5 percent.
There will be a special meeting Jan. 5 at 6 p.m. to discuss the city’s financial posture with citizens and among the mayor and council members.
An interim replacement will also be named for Councilman Dale Rogers, who has submitted his resignation. Rogers won the Dist. 3 seat on St. Mary Parish Council.
Rogers said he was proud of what the city council and mayor have accomplished during the nine years he has served.
Mayor Raymond Harris reminded residents that the city will no longer collect bulk waste such as appliances and yard waste. The city’s new waste handler, Pelican Waste, will take over the city’s collection service on Feb. 1. Residents must contact Pelican Waste to have bulk waste picked up at a fee.
