Early voting goes slowly for March 28 ballot

Fewer than 350 St. Mary Parish people took advantage of early voting for the tax propositions in the March 28 ballot, an election that seems likely to have a small turnout.
Registrar of Voters Jolene Holcombe was reluctant to make a specific prediction.
“Let’s just say I’m going to go with less than 20 percent,” she said.
A hotly contested governor’s race can bring out 50 to 55 percent of the parish vote, Holcombe said.
But there’s little on the March 28 ballot to excite voters, except, possibly, a parish road proposal that requires a tax rededication.
“But if the weather’s nice and people are out and about, I don’t know if [the road proposition] will be enough,” Holcombe said.
At the end of Wednesday, 331 people had voted early, including 127 by mail ballot before the in-person early voting opened Saturday.
By Wednesday, 184 people had voted at the courthouse in Franklin, and 147 had voted at Morgan City.
Early voting continues through this Saturday.
