Family of deceased deputy gives gift to sheriff's office

The wife and family of the late Gene Broussard, who worked 14 years with the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office, recently donated 12 handheld metal detectors to be used by staff for standard security operations at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center.
After retiring from a position at a car dealership in Franklin, Gene Broussard sought out a career in law enforcement, according to a news release.
In 1988, under the administration of Sheriff Huey P. Bourgeois, Broussard joined the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office and graduated from the Peace Officer Standards and Training academy later that year. Rising through the ranks, he took on a supervisory role at the jail during his 14 years of service.
“The donation will aid jail staff in their daily security duties,” Sheriff Mark Hebert said in the news release. “Broussard’s memory lives on at the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office as deputies work to exemplify the dedication to criminal justice Broussard and others like him demonstrated during their many years of service in law enforcement.” Broussard’s widow, Agnes, says Broussard “really loved his job.”
