Former cop arrested by state police
A former Baldwin Police officer has been charged with molestation of a juvenile, malfeasance in office, sexual battery and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.
Louisiana State Police Troop I information officer M/T Brooks David stated in a prepared news release Thursday that in October 2013, at the request of the Baldwin Police Department, troopers with the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations were asked to examine allegations of a Baldwin police officer distributing illegal narcotics.
The now-former officer was identified as 39-year-old Joseph Brent of Baldwin.
During the investigation, detectives were unable to substantiate the narcotics allegation. However it was reportedly discovered that Brent allegedly fathered a child with a 14-year-old juvenile who was living in the residence with Brent and his wife.
The juvenile gave birth to the child in July 2014 at which time DNA evidence was collected and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
Brent was arrested Thursday morning. He was transported to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center. No bond information was available this morning.
