Suspect gets seven years in prison for vehicular homicide of Patterson man

Staff Report

A Chauvin man was sentenced last week to serve seven years in prison for a June crash in Terrebonne Parish that claimed the life of William Matthew Boyne, 22 of Patterson.

Darrell Barlow, 52, of Chauvin, pleaded guilty Thursday to the charges of vehicular homicide, hit-and-run driving resulting in a death and obstruction of justice in 32nd Judicial District Court. District Judge Johnny Walker sentenced Barlow to seven years in prison at hard labor, according to Executive Assistant District Attorney Carlos Lazarus.

Barlow had faced up to 30 years on the vehicular homicide charge, Lazarus said.

The crash that killed Boyne occurred shortly before 10 p.m. June 17 on La. 56 south of the Chauvin Bridge in Terrebonne Parish.

Investigators learned that Boyne was walking north on the northbound shoulder of La. 56. The suspect vehicle was traveling northbound on La. 56, crossed the fog line, and struck Boyne. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased by the Terrebonne Parish Coroner’s Office.

Barlow had allegedly fled from the scene of the crash, but state police were able to locate Barlow and the green 1997 Ford F-150 he was driving.
