Hurricane protection prayers said

The Confraternity of Our Lady Star of the Sea gathered Saturday with prayers and hymns to begin the annual Novena of Thanksgiving to Our Lady Star of the Sea for what the group attributed to her protection during the past hurricane season.
The confraternity prays novenas for protection of the area from hurricanes and floods and placed the monument in 1975 on Brashear Avenue in Morgan City. Since the placement of the statue, no one in the Tri-City area has been seriously injured by storms during hurricane season, according to the group.
The Atlantic hurricane season began June 1 and ended Nov. 30. The confraternity gathered April 28 to begin its nine-day novena of petition for protection from storms during the upcoming hurricane season.
The 2013 Atlantic hurricane season was the least active season so far this century, and among the quietest on record since 1950, according to the Weather Channel. No hurricanes were rated Category 2 or greater in the Atlantic, Caribbean or Gulf of Mexico, the first year without a Category 2 or stronger hurricane in the Atlantic basin since 1968, according to The Weather Channel. Humberto and Ingrid, the only two hurricanes of the season, only reached Category 1 strength.
There were 13 named storms, which was one more than the 30-year average of 12 named storms.
