Mickey Mouse Head Start moves to old GW Hamilton
Mickey Mouse Head Start Center has moved to the former G.W. Hamilton Elementary School in Baldwin.
The facility received a makeover by Head Start staff, parents and UMCOR volunteers from Indiana who have been in St. Mary Parish for a week. Renovations included fresh coats of colorful paint along with a new sign in the front of the building.
Site Manager Cathy Eave has had assistance from Head Start parents and volunteers through UMCOR.
UMCOR Volunteer Coordinator and former educator, Elizabeth Graham said, “When we got the call from Head Start, we were so excited and immediately jumped on the opportunity to help out. Education is one of the most important aspects of building a community, so when kids see brand new things along with bright new colors, they are excited and become more receptive to learning new information.”
St. Mary CAA and Head Start have shared a working relationship with UMCOR-Sager Brown for years. Almetra J. Franklin, Head Start administrator and CEO, said she is proud to have a long lasting relationship with UMCOR.
“UMCOR is a community partner that has always been responsive with us and showed kindness to the Head Start Program,” Franklin said. “The revitalization of Mickey Mouse is just one of many projects they have assisted us with under the St. Mary CAA/ Head Start infrastructure, and we hope our collaborative efforts continue.”
