Sheriff’s deputy shot; 1 arrested after standoff

A St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s deputy was shot in the Ashton area Sunday.
The alleged shooter barricaded himself in a residence on Dumesnil Road near US 90 and was later apprehended, Louisiana State Police and Sheriff’s Office officials reported. The case has been handed over to LSP.
The deputy has not been identified, but was transported to a local hospital.
The suspect also sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Detail of those injuries and how they were sustained were not released.
Deputies responded to a 6:10 a.m. call of a possible shooting at the Dumesnil Road address, just off US 90 between La. 83 and La. 318. An injured male subject was removed from the scene and hospitalized.
While securing the scene, someone opened fire on the deputies. The sheriff’s Special Response Team was activated, and assistance was rendered by LSP and Iberia and Vermillion parish sheriff’s authorities.
The standoff lasted approximately three hours.
US 90 was closed during the incident and traffic diverted to La. 182.
State police had not released updated information as of press time this morning.
