Sheriff: Patterson man dies after being struck by truck in cane field

A 55-year-old Patterson man was killed and three others were injured after a pickup truck went off the roadway Friday night near Patterson and struck several people in a cane field, according to a St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office news release.
At 8:19 p.m. Friday, St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a vehicle crash on Victoria Riverside Road near Little Hope Lane that claimed the life of a Patterson man and injured three others. The investigation revealed that Cabot Pugh, 26, of Patterson was driving a 2002 GMC Sierra pickup truck west on Victoria Riverside Road when, for reasons still under investigation, he drove off the roadway and struck several people in a sugarcane field, the release said.
The group of people had stopped on the headland while out riding ATV's in the area. Kelly Dupre Sr., 55, of Patterson, was pronounced dead on the scene by the St. Mary Parish Coroner, the release said. Two others, a man and woman, were seriously injured in the crash and transported to hospitals in Lafayette and Baton Rouge by Acadian Air Med Services, the release stated. Another woman was transported to Teche Regional Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance with minor injuries. She was treated and released, according to the news release. Pugh was cited for careless operation of a vehicle. Pugh registered 0.00 grams-percent blood alcohol concentration on a breath test. A toxicology sample was obtained and has been submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation, the release said.
