(Updated) Sheriff: One injured, area evacuated after chlorine leak at Verdunville plant

Residents were evacuated and a worker was injured in Verdunville after a small chlorine occurred at a parish water plant Monday morning, according to a St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office news release. As of 12:43 p.m. Monday, the chlorine leak had been contained and Parish Road 131 is now open to traffic. Evacuated residents were allowed to return home, the release said.
At 9:51 a.m. today, the St Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office received reports of a small chlorine leak at 244 Lake Rd in Verdunville at the St Mary Parish Water District plant. Acadian Ambulance has transported a plant employee as he was directly exposed to the chemical, the release said.
The Franklin Fire Department was on scene and assisting in evacuating residences on Parish Road 131, from Wayne Road to Franchine Road. State Police Hazmat was contacted and responded, the release said.
All those requested to evacuate can find assistance at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 189 Elm St. in Centerville.
