Charenton-Sorrel residents advised to shelter in place - chemical spill under investigation

Sheriff Mark Hebert advises that deputies are responding to a chemical spill in Bayou Teche near the Adeline Bridge, according to Monday evening news release.
The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office received a report of a substance in the water at 5:30 p.m. Monday. Preliminary information from the site indicates that the chemical is petroleum based. Deputies have identified a source of the chemical which has been cut off and secured. However, the situation remains active.
Fire personnel are standing by. As a safety precaution, residents in the area are advised to shelter in place at this time. Agencies including the U.S. Coast Guard and Louisiana State Police Hazardous Material Unit are also responding. Water plant facilities along the Teche have been notified. Oil boom is in place to contain the spill. Road traffic on La. 87 and water vessel traffic east and west of the spill area is being restricted at this time.
