Community meeting to discuss possible M.E. Norman school closure

M.E. Norman Elementary School officials will hold a meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday to discuss talk of possibly closing Norman and redistributing students to M.D. Shannon Elementary.
The meeting be in the school cafeteria. Norman Principal Shannon Hoffpauir said she wants to meet with parents and inform them about what information school board officials presented at the Feb. 25 special school board meeting.
The St. Mary Parish School Board tabled discussion at that special meeting last week to potentially close Shannon Elementary in Morgan City and J.A. Hernandez Elementary in Franklin. The school board plans to meet again in three weeks to vote on the proposal.
The Daily Review received a letter to the editor last week from several former Morgan City High School teachers and administrators saying that M.E. Norman Elementary’s closing would be more practical and more cost-effective. The letter also cited safety and historical reasons to keep M.D. Shannon open and close M.E. Norman.
