State Police: Patterson man dies after vehicle hits tree

A 52-year-old Patterson man died after his vehicle struck a tree on La. 182 late Sunday night in the Patterson area, police said.
The fatal crash occurred shortly before 11:45 p.m. on La. 182 north of U.S. 90 in St. Mary Parish. Jimmy Barras, 52, of Patterson, was driving a 2003 Toyota Matrix westbound on La. 182, according to a State Police Troop I news release. Barras’ vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway and partially onto the grass shoulder, the release said.
Barras’ vehicle began to rotate clockwise and struck a tree. Barras was wearing a seat belt, but suffered fatal injuries, the release said. The St. Mary Parish Coroner’s Office arrived on scene and pronounced Barras dead, the release stated.
As part of the on-going crash investigation, the St. Mary Parish Coroner’s Office obtained blood samples from Barras, police said. The results will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Troop I.
