Update: Tuesday's twister category EF1

Staff Report

The National Weather Service says the tornado that touchdown down Tuesday between Baldwin and Franklin was an EF 1 twister carrying winds of 110 mph.

The tornado was a mile or two away from Baldwin, National Weather Service meteorologist Roger Erickson said.

An EF1 tornado is categorized as weak.

Erickson drove out to the community Wednesday to look at the damage patterns to determine whether a tornado occurred in the area, he said.

The tornado was on the ground for 2.6 miles before dissipating to another sugar cane field near La. 87, said in the damage report.

It started in the field next to the shipyard off of U.S. 90 close to the canal, Erickson said.

Two businesses and 28 homes damaged by the tornado. No injuries were reported.

A restaurant and many mobile homes lost their metal roofs. A few homes were knocked off their pilings, the report said.

At least 20 telephone poles were snapped, in addition to many trees.

This is probably the same storm that touched down in St. James Parish and caused the tornado damage up there, Erickson said.
