St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert reports that in a collaborative effort with the St. Mary Levee District, increased patrols and a specialized detail are being implemented on all levee roads.
Recently, the St Mary Levee District has received numerous complaints concerning vehicles riding on top and on the flood side of the levee. These activities allegedly cause damage to the embankments as pre-hurricane season preparations are being made to maintain and operate the levee system.
The Sheriff’s Office reminds the public that all levee roads, crowns, slopes and bases are considered private property. Those trespassing by riding or crossing on levees in areas not designated for public use are subject to criminal penalties.
