Markell Karez Coleman was born March 19, 1979 in Lafayette to the union of Margaret Keal Coleman and the late Alfred Coleman Sr.
He attended Mary Hines Elementary School, Franklin Junior High and Franklin Senior High where he was active in football, and graduated in 1998. He furthered his education by attending Delgado Community College (A.A.S. in Culinary Arts) in 2005; and the University of West Georgia (B.S. in Management and B.S. in Marketing) graduating in 2011. He was also a member of the American Marketing Association at West Georgia University; and the American Culinary Federation.
He accepted Christ at the age of 12 and was a member of St. Moses Baptist Church, Drill Team, Youth Choir and Male Chorus. His home away from home church was Elizabeth Baptist Church in Douglasville, GA.
He started his culinary career as an apprentice and sous chef at the famed Bella Luna restaurant in New Orleans. He was currently employed as operational manager of Piedmont Healthcare in Newnan, GA, and was also a chef at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Atlanta, GA.
Markell enjoyed shopping (as evidenced by his extensive sneaker collection) and enjoyed old school Cadillac cars, fishing and cooking for people. He was a die-hard New Orleans Saints fan that will be remembered for his loving, generous, humble, peaceful, sweet and funny spirit.
He loved his wife, Tamara Whitehead Coleman, since first meeting her at the Union Six District Baptist Association Youth Congress in 1995. They were surrounded by close friends and family on December 9, 2009 when they were married in Montego Bay, Jamaica. He leaves to cherish his memory and in God’s care his loving wife of 5 years and faithful companion for over 20 years, Tamara Whitehead Coleman; his adored Shih Tzu, Tinkerbell “Bella”; mother, Margaret Coleman of Sorrel; three sisters, Michelle Kirt of Verdunville, Shawnequa (Willis) Curley of Lafayette, and Yolanda (Alvin) Polk of Jeanerette; one brother, Alfred (Felicia) Coleman Jr. of Leesville, LA; sisters-in- law, Nedra (Craig) Francis of New Iberia and Tammy Whitehead of New Orleans; brother-in-law, Reginald (Nikki) Whitehead of New Iberia; his godchildren, A’Breonta Keal of Jeanerette, Sydney Francis of New Iberia and Ja’Mya Hurst of Jeanerette; and was looking forward to christening Eilan and Aubrey Hoskins; his best friends, Eldrige “JR” Hoskins Jr., EnRico Mays, Wilson Jackson Jr., John Allen Banks and Terrell “Bubba” August; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, friends, colleagues and countless others that will cherish him.
He now joins in glory with his father, Alfred Coleman Sr.; his maternal grandparents, Clarence Keal Sr. and Louella Keal; and his paternal grandparents, Enny and Emma Dell Coleman.
