St. Mary NAACP’s inaugural golf tournament set May 16

The St. Mary Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is hosting its inaugural golf tournament and scholarship fundraiser on Saturday, May 16, at the Atchafalaya at Idlewild Golf Course located at 400 Cotten Road in Patterson.
The NAACP, a 501(c)(3) organization, was founded February 1909 and is the nation’s oldest, largest and widely recognized grassroots-based civil rights organization. The organization’s vision is to ensure a society in which all individuals have equal rights and there is no racial hatred or racial discrimination.
“We are excited to host our very first golf tournament this year,” said St. Mary NAACP President Reginald D. Weary. “Funds generated from this event will be used to provide college scholarships for graduating high school students in the St. Mary Parish community to help defray some of the cost to attend the college of their choice. The children are our future and we must ensure the barriers and obstacles are cleared for them to achieve their dreams. The golf tournament is the primary way the organization raises money for our scholarship funding. Your contribution is tax deductible including donated items that can be used for door prizes.”
