MC 12s unbeaten in south regional play
Morgan City’s 12-year-old All-Stars went unbeaten in the Louisiana Dixie Youth Majors South Regional play over the weekend in Ponchatoula.
Morgan City, the District 3 champion, opened the tournament with an 8-4 win over west Monroe North Friday.
In that game, Morgan City made the most of its five hits to upend the District 5 runner-up. Matt Mire led the way with two hits and three RBIs while Dakota Gibson also had three RBIs.
Luke Barbier was the starter for Morgan City, tossing three innings with seven strikeouts. Trent Hillen pitched two innings in relief for Morgan City. He had two strikeouts.
On Saturday, Morgan City decked Minden 12-7.
Hugh Hamer and Dylan Cornes led the way offensively with two hits each while Brett Morell and Gunnar Theriot each had two RBIs.
Barbier was the starter for Morgan City, throwing three innings while collecting six strikeouts. Cornes came in in relief of Barbier and tossed 22/3 innings and also contributed with six K’s. Barbier and Cornes both got ahead of Minden’s batters throwing seven and five first pitch strikes, respectively.
Morgan City held off Ville Platte 7-6 in a back-and-forth game Sunday.
The local team led 7-3 going into the final inning but Ville Platte stormed back with six runs in the sixth, but Morgan City survived the outburst. Ville Platte had just two hits but Morgan City’s four errors kept the game tight.
Theriot and Mire had two hits each while Morell also had a hit to lead Morgan City’s batters.
Theriot had four big RBIs while Hillen and Mire had an RBI each.
Barbier and Hillen handled the pitching duties for Morgan City. Barbier had six strikeouts while Hillen had two.
Morgan City will face the Minden Continentals at 7:30 tonight.
The regional will continue through Tuesday when a champion will be crowned.
The winners of the north and south regionals will advance to face each other in the state Dixie Youth title game in Alexandria.
