Indentity of check fraud suspect sought

Authorities are seeking the public’s help identifying a man wanted for allegedly cashing almost $2,000 in fake checks in Amelia and Morgan City, according to a St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office news release.
On Sept. 16, the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office began investigating a report of a fraudulent check that was cashed at an Amelia business. In the days following, the Sheriff’s Office received two additional complaints of fake checks being cashed in Amelia and learned that a similar incident also occurred within the city limits of Morgan City, the release said.
Working together, detectives with the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office and Morgan City Police Department determined that the same man went to each of the businesses, presented the fraudulent documents, and used another person’s identification card to cash the checks, the release said.
The suspect was successful in cashing a total of nearly $2,000 in phony checks, the release said.
Detectives are seeking the identity of the person pictured in the surveillance video or information on the newer model champagne colored Chevy Malibu associated with the crimes, the news release stated.
The suspect is seen getting out of the passenger side of the car while another person sits in the driver’s seat, the release said.
