Parish council gets updates on events

The St Mary Parish Council was urged to support Red Ribbon Week activities at their meeting Wednesday by a representative from the committee that organizes events intended to steer young people away from risky behavior involving drugs and alcohol.
The theme this year for Red Ribbon Week is “Shine your light, do what’s right, be drug free.” Scheduled events include a parade on Saturday, Oct. 24 in Morgan City. A day of prayer will be held on Sunday, Oct. 25 and on Monday, students will sign a pledge to stay drug and alcohol free.
Tammy Rogers with the Harvest Moon Festival also was in attendance last Wednesday to inform the council about the schedule of events for the annual celebration held in Franklin Oct. 31. More information to come.
Other items on the council agenda included the introduction of three ordinances. The first and second were in regard to a specific use permit and a zoning map amendment respectively. The third, authorized St. Mary Parish to enter into an agreement with the U.S Department of Agriculture to lease office space at the Blevins Building in Franklin.
The last major item on the council agenda and the one that took up the majority of the council’s time was in regard to an amendment introduced by councilmen Glen Hidalgo. The measure would have begun the process of examining the feasibility of bringing in a third party management team to help the Atchafalaya Golf Course at Idlewild sustain themselves financially. The measure was tabled for a later date by a vote of six to four.
