A proper farewell for American flags

Area Cub and Boy Scout troops gathered Sunday at Lake End Parkway for an American flag retirement ceremony. Cub Scouts from Pack 438 in Morgan City and Boy Scout Troops 49 in Morgan City and 41 in Patterson were among those that took part in the ceremony. The flags were retired in accordance with the following directive from the beginning of Title 36, Section 176, of the United States Code: “No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America;” Furthermore, Paragraph (K) of this same Title 36, Section 176, states: “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” Ray LaHoste, Cub master of Pack 438, said the ashes of the flags and the brass rings on them would be buried separately.
