Suspicious vehicle complaint leads to drug arrest

A 25-year-old Patterson man was charged Tuesday with intending to distribute crack cocaine after a St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to a suspicious vehicle complaint at a Bayou Vista business, Sheriff Mark Hebert said in a news release.
—Lendell Riles, 25, of the 1500 block of Cherry Street in Patterson, was arrested at 8:13 p.m. Tuesday on the charges of possession of Schedule II crack cocaine with intent to distribute, resisting an officer, and violation of a controlled dangerous substance law (drug free zone). A patrol deputy responded to a complaint of a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of a business on U.S. 90 in Bayou Vista.
The deputy made contact with the occupant of the vehicle, identified as Riles. Riles made statements that indicated to the deputy that illegal drugs were inside the vehicle, Hebert said. Detectives with the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division responded to the scene. As the investigation progressed, detectives contacted the Morgan City Police Department K-9 team for assistance.
When the K-9 unit signaled that there were illegal drugs in the vehicle, Riles fled on foot, Hebert said. Detectives gave chase and quickly apprehended Riles who was then detained, Hebert said. During a search of the vehicle, detectives located two bags of crack cocaine, Hebert said. Following the investigation, which took place within 2,000 feet of a church, Riles was jailed with no bail set.
Hebert reported responding to 46 complaints in the parish.
Morgan City Police Chief James Blair reported the following arrests:
—Fran Keller, 52, of Napoleonville, at 7:40 p.m. Tuesday on a warrant for probation violation.
Keller, who was already incarcerated on other charges, was booked on the warrant.
—Nathaniel A. Rollins, 19, of Brashear Avenue in Morgan City, at 10:53 p.m. Tuesday on the charges of possession of synthetic marijuana third offense, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, violation of uniformed controlled dangerous substance laws (drug free zone), resisting an officer and on warrants charging him with four counts of failure to appear for drug court.
Narcotics detectives responded to a motel on Brashear Avenue in regards to illegal drug activity taking place inside one of the rooms, Blair said. Detectives arrived and made contact with a woman inside of the room. While speaking with the woman, detectives heard a noise coming from the closet, Blair said.
Detectives found Rollins hiding inside the closet. Rollins hid his hands and was ordered out the closet several times but refused to do so, Blair said. Moments later, he was detained and was found to have four warrants for his arrest.
Investigators searched Rollins and located suspected synthetic marijuana and drug paraphernalia on him, Blair said. Detectives also located suspected methamphetamine in the area where Rollins was hiding, which Rollins stated belonged to him, Blair said. The incident took place near a school, a drug-free zone. Rollins was jailed.
—Lectoria Grogan, 27, of St. Clair Street in Morgan City, at 12:21 a.m. today on the charges of disturbing the peace intoxicated and on warrants charging her with resisting an officer, simple battery and criminal damage to property.
Officers responded to Teche Regional Medical Center in regards to a disturbance involving an altercation. Officers arrived and located Grogan along with another female individual when officers were told by witnesses that Grogan was involved in the disturbance.
Grogan had allegedly been drinking and appeared to be intoxicated, Blair said. Grogan had several warrants for her arrest and was jailed.
Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported the following arrest:
—Chelsey Michelle Cook, 28, of the 700 block of Main Street in Patterson at 11:23 p.m. Tuesday on the charges of aggravated battery on a police officer and disturbing the peace intoxicated. Cook allegedly spit in the face of an officer while being arrested, LaSalle said. Cook was jailed with no bail set.
Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported no arrests.
