Recreation District No. 3 has tax proposition on ballot

The governor’s race and other state and regional campaigns may be taking up all the headline space. But in Saturday’s general election, voters in the Bayou Vista area will have another choice to make.
Recreation District No. 3 officials hope voters will approve the combination of two property taxes into one 8.78-mill levy that will fund maintenance for park and recreation facilities.
Stan Robison, who chairs the District 3 board, said a “yes” vote is in favor of combining the two millages, which would have expired in 2017 and 2020, into one.
The tax bill for district property owners would remain the same. The tax amounts to $21.95 a year for a $100,000 home with Louisiana’s homestead exemption, and $109.75 for a $200,000 home that qualifies for the exemption.
The money would not go for new projects, Robison said.
But “it’s a good quality of life issue,” Robison said. “We’ve done a lot of good things in Bayou Vista. What we want to do is maintain what we’ve already built.”
The projects already completed include the Bayou Vista Community Center, the baseball complex and walking trail, the 18-hole Noah’s Adventure miniature golf course, “The Swamp” skate park, batting cages, and the pavilion, restrooms and playgrounds at Bayou Vista’s Central Park.
The district also cooperates with other local entities on work like the maintenance and beautification of Southeast Boulevard and the preparation of a vacant lot near St. Bernadette’s Church for use as softball fields.
