Traditional boat-building is ‘In The Mind of the Maker’

Writer and filmmaker C.E. Richard will present his short documentary In the Mind of the Maker Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. at the Jeanerette Museum.
The film will be followed by a discussion of how traditional boat building in the Atchafalaya Basin can offer valuable insights into the human experience of memory, imagination, and creative expression.
Because Louisiana’s old time boat builders used no blue prints or plans to construct their vessels, they provide an intriguing example of the brain’s extraordinary capacity for complex visualization.
For more than 20 years, Professor Richard has written books and produced documentary films for PBS, all focused on topics related to his native French Louisiana. His latest book is a collection of personal essays about Louisiana eroding coast, entitled Coastal Sketches: Field Notes & Photos from ‘The End of the World.’
Richard is a Research Fellow at the Center for Louisiana Studies at UL Lafayette, where he was awarded the university’s highest honor last year, the title of Distinguished Professor.
In the Mind of the Maker is being presented by the museum free of charge and is open to adults. Seating for the program may be limited and taken on a first come, first serve basis.
