Berwick man accused of threatening officers

A 39-year-old Berwick man was charged Monday with threatening police officers after authorities responded to a report of a man saying he was going to harm himself, Berwick Police Chief James Richard said.
—Mario Mora, 39, of River Road in Berwick, was arrested at 2:11 p.m. Monday on warrants charging him with two counts of threatening public officials and disturbing the peace by alarming public.
On Monday, police responded to a disturbance at Mora’s home where he was threatening to harm himself, Richard said. Upon arrival, Mora made statements threatening to harm officers, Richard said. The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office and Morgan City Police assisted Berwick Police in the investigation. No bail is set.
Blair reported the following arrests:
—Raul M. Mavarez-Ortiz, 53, of Bowman Street in Morgan City, at 6:24 p.m. Monday on the charge of simple burglary.
An officer responded to a home on Fourth Street in regards to a theft. The victim told the officer that there was a noise heard at the front of the home. The victim looked outside and observed a person inside the victim’s vehicle. The victim attempted to stop the suspect, who left the area on a bicycle, but was unable to do so, Blair said. A battery charger was allegedly taken from the vehicle. Witnesses reported someone attempting to sell a battery charger near a business on Federal Avenue, Blair said. Police located the suspect, Navarez-Ortiz, near the area of Federal Avenue and Egle Street. Ortiz was in possession of a battery charger, which was positively identified as belonging to the victim, Blair said. Ortiz was jailed.
—Charles W. Cantrell, 45, of Bayou Vista, at 4 p.m. Monday on warrants charging him with failure to appear for no inspection sticker and failure to appear for expired license plate.
Cantrell was transported from the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Center to the Morgan City Police Department in regards to active arrest warrants Morgan City Police held on Cantrell. Cantrell was jailed.
—Chance D. Mitchell, 47, of Mike Drive in Patterson, at 11:35 p.m. Saturday on the charges of appearing in an intoxicated condition and open container/consuming alcohol in public view.
An officer patrolling the area of La. 182 near Cottonwood Street observed a person, later identified as Mitchell, walking on the side of the roadway with an open container of alcohol. The officer came into contact with Mitchell, who appeared to be intoxicated. Mitchell was jailed.
—Michael S. Dodd, 42, of La. 182 in Morgan City, at 5 a.m. Sunday on the charge of simple burglary.
Officers came into contact with Dodd on La. 182. A warrants check revealed that the Morgan City Police Department held an active arrest warrant for Dodd. Dodd was placed under arrest and transported to the Morgan City Police Department where he was booked and incarcerated.
St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert reported responding to 47 complaints in the parish and reported the following arrest in east St. Mary Parish:
—Kenneth J. Alfred, 42, of the 1200 block of Canal Road in Bayou Vista, at 5:28 p.m. Monday on a warrant for failure to appear on the charges of direct contempt, speeding and failure to honor written promise to appear.
A deputy responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of St. Mary Plaza in Bayou Vista. The deputy made contact with the driver of the vehicle, identified as Alfred, and located the active warrant for his arrest. Alfred was jailed and later released on $365 bail.
Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported no arrests.
