Assumption slips past MCHS in 8 innings

Assumption scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to knock off Morgan City, 5-3, and claim the District 7-4A title in Napoleonville Thursday.
The two teams played to a 3-all tie through seven innings, and Morgan City was unable to score in the top of the eighth before Assumption ended the game in the bottom of the frame with the walk-off win.
The game was a battle of teams atop the district standings who entered with identical 8-1 marks. Assumption avenged an earlier season 10-0 run-rule loss to Morgan City with Thursday’s win.
Despite the low scoring, both teams struggled with errors as Assumption committed five and Morgan City, six. Just three of the game’s eight total runs were earned.
Morgan City took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third and added two more runs in the top of the fourth for a 3-0 lead.
Assumption tied the game at 3 in the bottom of the fifth.
Hits were even at five apiece, while Morgan City stranded 14 runners on base.
Kennedy Hebert led Morgan City with a 2-for-3 performance with a triple, an RBI and a run. Scottie Metrejean added a 1-for-5 performance with an RBI to lead Morgan City.
Hebert suffered the loss on the mound. In 7.2 innings, she surrendered five runs — three earned — on five hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.
Morgan City (13-6 overall, 8-2 in district) will return to action Monday when it hosts Thibodaux in a nondistrict contest. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
Central Catholic rally falls short to Hanson
Central Catholic’s rally in the top of the seventh inning fell short in a 6-5 defeat to Hanson in District 7-1A action in Franklin Thursday.
Trailing 6-3 entering the inning, Central Catholic scored two runs in the top of the seventh.
Early on, Hanson, ranked No. 4 in the latest Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 1A power rankings, scored a run in the bottom of the first and five more in the third inning for a 6-0 advantage.
Central Catholic began to chip away with two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to cut its deficit to 6-3.
Sarah Thomas suffered the loss for Central Catholic. In three innings, she allowed five earned runs on nine hits with one walk.
Hanson outhit Central Catholic 13-6.
Taylor Picou led Central Catholic with a 2-for-4 performance with a double, two RBIs and a run. Other top contributors included Hallie Autin, 1-for-2, an RBI and a run; and Kaleigh Navarro, 1-for-3, an RBI.
Central Catholic (13-12, 8-5) will return to action today when it hosts Gueydan in a District 7-1A contest set for a 5 p.m. start.
Erath run-rules
Patterson
The Patterson Lumberjills fell to Erath, 12-2, in six innings in District 8-3A action on the road Thursday.
While Patterson tied the game at 2 in the top of the second inning, Erath took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the second and scored in every inning after for the victory.
No individual stats were available for Patterson.
Patterson concludes its season with a 3-14 overall mark and a 2-10 record in district play.
