MCHS beats Ellender, remains perfect in district

Morgan City High School remained perfect in District 7-4A action with a 9-1 victory against Ellender in Morgan City Thursday.
The Tigers (11-10 overall, 4-0 in district) scored one run in the first, three in the third, four in the fourth and a final run in the fifth.
Ellender pushed across its lone run in the top of the fourth.
Morgan City outhit Ellender, 11-6.
The Tigers also stole eight bases in the win.
Philip Hutchinson led Morgan City with a 3-for-4 performance with two RBIs. Other top offensive contributors included Colby Glatter, 2-for-4, a double and an RBI; Joshua Lorenzo, 1-for-3, a double, two RBIs and a run; Evan Stadalis, 1-for-3, a double and an RBI; and Abram Hartley, 1-for-3, an RBI, two stolen bases and a run.
On the mound, Gage Hirschmann earned the win. In 4.2 innings, he surrendered an unearned run on five hits with five walks, one hit batter and six strikeouts.
In the loss, Ellender stranded 10 baserunners.
Morgan City will return to action Saturday when it hosts South Terrebonne in district play. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. South Terrebonne is ranked No. 10 in Class 4A in the latest unofficial Louisiana High School Athletic Association power rankings. Morgan City is ranked No. 17.
Berwick routs Kaplan
The Berwick Panthers routed Kaplan, 10-0, in six innings in District 8-3A action in Berwick Thursday.
Bradley Gray led the team on the mound with a complete one-hitter, while Tanner Caldwell finished 4-for-4 at the plate, just a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.
Berwick scored all of its runs in three innings. The Panthers scored three runs in the first, six in the fourth and one in the bottom of the sixth to end the game via the mercy rule.
Berwick outhit Kaplan, 13-1.
Gray earned the win. In six innings, he fanned five.
Offensively, Caldwell finished with two singles, a double, a triple and three RBIs. Other top offensive contributors included Andrew Askew, 2-for-4, three RBIs; D.J. Robicheaux 2-for-3, a double, a triple and two RBIs; and Logan Angeron, 2-for-4, an RBI.
Berwick (11-13, 6-1) will return to action Saturday when it travels to face Kaplan in a 1 p.m. contest.
Central Catholic wins
in extra innings
The Central Catholic Eagles used an 11-run eighth inning to break a 5-all tie en route to a dominant 16-6 victory against Vermilion Catholic in District 7-1A action.
With the score tied at 5 since the sixth inning, the Eagles plated 11 runs in the eighth, including a grand slam by Stefano Guarisco.
Vermilion Catholic plated a run in its final at bat for the final margin.
While Vermilion Catholic took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, Central Catholic responded in the top of the third with four runs for a 4-1 advantage.
Vermilion Catholic cut its lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the third and retook the lead, 5-4, with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Central Catholic tied the game in the top of the sixth.
“This was one of the craziest games I have ever been a part of,” Central Catholic coach Tyler Jensen said. “We were flat to start out. We did not have the right mindset. We missed some opportunities to have big innings. Through all of this, we found a way to get it done.”
Hits were even at 13 apiece, both teams stranded 12 runners and both teams committed four errors.
Charlie Solar earned the win in relief. In four innings, he surrendered one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts.
“Give credit to Charlie Solar for coming in relief and doing a heck of a job for us,” Jensen said. “He got us out of some jams to keep us alive and gave us an opportunity to have our big inning. My hope is we learn from our mistakes in this game and come out with a better mindset on Tuesday. Also, I want to thank all fans that made the trip to Abbeville. Your attendance is appreciated.”
Starter Blake Hidalgo received a no-decision. In four innings, he surrendered five earned runs on nine hits with three walks and fanned two.
Offensively, Guarisco led Central Catholic with a 2-for-4 performance with a grand slam, four RBIs and two runs. Other top offensive contributors included Samuel Guarisco, 3-for-4, an RBI and three runs; Drake Angeron, 2-for-6, an RBI and three runs; Adam Dupuis, 2-for-3, an RBI and three runs; Mitchell Lemoine, 2-for-5, an RBI and a run; Thomas Garber, 1-for-3, three RBIs; Gregory Leger, 1-for-5, two RBIs and a run; Patrick Barron, an RBI and a run; and Charlie Solar, an RBI.
Central Catholic (18-3, 8-0) will return to action Tuesday when it hosts Hanson Memorial in a 6 p.m. contest. Hanson is ranked No. 3 in the latest unofficial Louisiana High School Athletic Association power rankings, while Central Catholic is ranked No. 1.
