Investigation ongoing in fatal tractor crash

Staff Report

State police are still investigating an April 8 crash that left a 58-year-old Cut Off man dead after a Bayou Vista man’s pickup truck ran into a tractor on La. 3235, Troop C Spokesman Jesse LaGrange said.
Nolan Waguespack, 58, died April 8 at a hospital, LaGrange said.
Shortly before 4 p.m. April 8, the Louisiana State Police Troop C began investigating a serious injury crash on La. 3235 near La. 3161. It involved a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado and a John Deere Tractor. The driver of the tractor, Nolan Waguespack, 58, of Cut Off, was partially ejected.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Waguespack was traveling north on La. 3235 in the right lane. He was driving a John Deere Farming Tractor model 5525 with his amber caution lights flashing.
The Silverado, driven by Chris Dehart, 63, of Bayou Vista, approached the slow moving tractor from behind.
Dehart attempted to steer to the left to avoid the tractor but he struck it on the left rear side, police said. The tractor overturned, and Waguespack was partially ejected through the back window of the fully enclosed cab, police said. He sustained serious injuries and was transported to a hospital where he later died, police said.
Dehart was wearing his seat belt and received minor injuries. Waguespack’s tractor was equipped with a lap seat belt but he was not restrained, police said. Alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the crash. Dehart submitted a blood sample and the test results are pending.
The crash is under investigation, and police have not filed any charges or issued any citations, LaGrange said.
