Berwick's Wiley signs with LSU Eunice

By ZACHARY FITZGERALD

Berwick High pitcher Cameron Wiley held a signing ceremony Tuesday to celebrate his decision to continue his baseball career at junior college powerhouse LSU-Eunice.
“It’s been a childhood dream,” Wiley said of playing college baseball. “Just to sign that paper, it’s finally setting in that I’m actually doing it.”
Wiley said a few schools showed interest, but he “felt at home” going to LSU-Eunice.
The LSU-Eunice Bengals, a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association, finished the 2016 season with a 51-6 record. The squad began the season with a 33-0 start that spanned more than the first two months of the season.
LSU Eunice was ranked No. 1 during the regular season and fell at the NJCAA Regional 23 Tournament to Jones County Junior College.
During the last 10 years, LSU Eunice has won five national titles, has finished as national runner-up once and has placed third at the world series once.
Wiley said he hopes to pitch a few innings at LSU-Eunice to establish himself on the pitching staff and earn his innings.
In 2016, Wiley was an honorable mention selection on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 3A All-State team. He finished the season with a 4-2 mark. In 37.1 innings, he recorded a 2.81 ERA. Wiley surrendered 15 earned runs with 18 walks and fanned 32.
Offensively, Wiley batted .329. In 78 at-bats, he recorded 29 hits, including 10 doubles, and collected 13 RBIs.
He was a first-team All-District 8-3A outfielder.
Wiley said he was grateful to his Berwick teammates for pushing him to get to pitch in college.
He said his dream is to finish his high school career with a state baseball championship.
