Berwick High School junior wide receiver Kenan Jones displayed his talents at the U.S. Army All-American Combine early this month in San Antonio, Texas.
Jones emerged from the event, put on by the U.S. Army All-American Bowl game, as a second-team selection, Berwick High Coach Eric Holden said.
Holden said Jones was one of 600 football players nationwide invited to the event.
Jones said the event was a great experience.
“It was a great experience all around, and I know I came back a better player from that seeing the top talent around the country, all of the top players in my class,” he said.
Holden, who accompanied Jones at the event, said that his star wide receiver dominated in one-on-one competition.
“No one could cover him,” Holden said. “They had one guy basically held him the whole time and then another guy literally tripped him on purpose. Kenan was a specimen. You could tell he was just physically beyond those kids.”
Jones said he med a lot of people at the event.
The event was similar to the NFL combine as players went through tests to measure their speed, agility and power.
Holden said Jones was invited to the Under Armor Combine in March in Houston as well as a Regional for Nike’s The Opening.
During his time working with Jones, Holden said he has seen improvement in his soon-to-be-senior.
“I think his intensity has increased,” Holden said. “His knowledge of the game, you can see that. Understanding positioning as far as running his routes. … He’s gotten better with his hands. His ball skills, when he has to go up for a ball is impeccable. It’s incredible just watching him. He made a couple of good catches at the game. He’s as good as advertised.”
Jones, a first-team All-District 8-3A and first-team Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 3A All-State selection this past year, finished his junior season with more than 1,000 yards receiving.
Jones said he has offers from LSU and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, while Holden said Texas A&M said they would offer him when he went to visit.
Jones said he has no leader right now for his signature.
“I’m just going through the process right now,” he said.
Holden said he is elated for Kenan.
“He’s just an incredible kid. … A lot of times you see these guys, they get these offers, and they just become egotistical,” Holden said. “He’s not that way. He’s just a kind-hearted, great kid who just loves playing football and just wants to be a kid.”
