Morgan City tops Berwick in four games in annual Pink contest

Morgan City topped Berwick 3-1 (25-14, 18-25, 25-18, 25-15) in the Lady Tiger’s annual Paint the Pit Pink contest in Morgan City Thursday.
Prior to the District 8-III match between the two rivals, the teams gathered with a check for $8,000 that will be presented to Louisiana Foundation for Cancer Care, in partnership with Oncologics. The money will stay in the parish, and much of it will be used for mammograms.
Through the years, Berwick and Morgan City have raised approximately $120,000.
The two teams also had honorary servers before the game. Morgan City was represented by Brenda Green, the great aunt of Morgan City High School sophomore volleyball player Karmen Peterson.
Berwick’s server was Susan Price, project manager of Health and Physical Education and Science for the St. Mary Parish School board. She was a long-time Morgan City High School teacher before moving up to the school board’s Central Office System.
As for the match, Morgan City had 47 kills, 42 assists and eight solo blocks.
Abby Reynaud led Morgan City with three kills, 41 assists, five digs and one solo block. Other top contributors included Sh’diamond Holly, 23 kills, one dig and five solo blocks; Katelyn Gautreaux, 18 digs; Brandi Albarado, one ace and 12 digs; Paige Loftin, eight kills and one dig; Mckenzi Smith, three kills, one assist, two aces and three digs; Peterson, seven kills and one block; and Emily Boudreaux, seven digs.
No individual statistics were available for Berwick.
In junior varsity action, Berwick won 2-1 (17-25, 25-20, 15-11).
Nia Lightfoot led Morgan City with 10 kills, one ace, 11 digs and two blocks. Other top contributors included Smith, one kill, 11 assists and two digs; and Jolee Nini, two kills, four assists, two aces and five digs.
In freshman action, Morgan City won 2-1 (25-19, 16-25, 15-10).
Morgan City had 14 aces and hit for a 0.393 clip.
Sarajane Nini led Morgan City with nine assists, eight aces and one dig. Other top contributors included Jamia Francois, three kills, three aces, four digs and two solo blocks; and Deryon Johnson, eight kills and two aces.
Morgan City (7-16 overall, 3-2 in district) will return to action Saturday when it hosts Central Lafourche.
Berwick (8-13, 1-4) will return to action this weekend in a Baton Rouge tournament.
Central Catholic wins
Central Catholic defeated Covenant Christian Academy 3-0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-8) on the road Thursday.
No individual stats were available.
With the win, Central Catholic improves to 2-0 in District 6-V and 24-10 overall.
The Lady Eagles will return to action Monday when they travel to face Christian Life.
Patterson defeats
West St. Mary
Patterson swept West St. Mary 3-0 (25-9, 25-22, 25-14) in high school volleyball action at Patterson Wednesday.
The Lumberjills had 24 aces in the District 2-IV contest.
Morgan Jones led the squad with 10 Aces and 11 kills. Other top contributors included Josie Merida, one kill, one dig and 14 assists; Katelyn Larson, two aces, three kills and eight digs; Ashlynn Rock, five kills, one dig and one block; Tapanga Haven, one dig and six assists; Madison Paul, four aces and one kill; and Kathryn Craddock, four aces.
Patterson (5-10 overall, 3-2 in district) will return to action Saturday when it participates in Highland Baptist’s tournament.
