Patterson alums to meet on gridiron

They may have played on the same team together on the prep level but when Houston and Florida State square off in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Thursday at 11 a.m., Patterson High alums Trevon Stewart and Lorenzo Phillips will be on opposing sides.
The duo, 2012 graduates of Patterson High, signed Division I scholarships out of high school, Stewart with Houston and Phillips with LSU. Phillips moved on to East Mississippi Community College for the 2014 season before and rejoining the Division 1 ranks when he signed with Florida State earlier this year.
Phillips is a 6-foot, 2-inch, 225-pound linebacker who is second on the depth chart at one linebacker spot behind redshirt senior Terrance Smith.
Phillips has played in all 12 games this season, recording 11 total tackles (seven solo and four assists). He had 1.5 tackles for loss totaling three yards.
For Houston, Stewart will conclude a decorated college career Thursday. He enters the bowl game fourth on the team this season with 72 total tackles (49 solo and 23 assists). Included in that number are 9.5 tackles for losses (including six sacks) totaling 70 yards, two interceptions, one pass break up, three passes defensed, six quarterback hurries, three fumble recoveries, one forced-fumble and one safety.
He was a first-team American Athletic Conference selection at safety this season, while he also was named to Phil Steele’s All-American Athletic Conference first-team this season.
Florida State enters Thursday’s matchup, which will be aired on ESPN, with a 10-2 overall mark. They finished 6-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Their two losses came to Clemson and Georgia Tech.
Meanwhile, Houston finished 12-1 overall and 8-1 in conference play. The Cougars suffered their lone loss to UConn.
