Atchafalaya Golf Association cup matches

Staff Report

The Atchafalaya Golf Association’s inaugural AGA Cup matches are being held this weekend at The Atchafalaya at Idlewild near Patterson.
Internationally, cup matches such as the Ryder Cup, the President’s Cup, the Walker Cup and the Solheim Cup hold their matches at the end of the golf season with matches typically played in October or November.
The AGA Cup is designed similar to the international cups in that AGA members must compete in a tournament schedule and earn points to be considered as AGA Cup team members.
AGA members were awarded points for their place in the order of finish for each event, and the top 22 players automatically qualified to play in the AGA Cup matches. The two top finishers are team captains. The two players on top of the point standings are David Levingston and David Burch.
Levingston and Burch had to choose from the remaining top 22 players, and they also each had a captain’s pick from the AGA members that did not qualify in the top 22.
This year’s teams are as follows:
—Team One: Levingston, Stephen Mann, Koby Percle, Chad Vining, Bill Marin, Grant Garber, Charles Mayea, Rob Radtke, Bryan Myers, Ryan Cheramie, Gippy Lacoste and Doug Streety.
—Team Two: Burch, Jason Louviere, Glenn Jumonville, Gary Stansbury Sr., Mike Beadle, Gary Hover, Andy Lange, Briant Dozar, Lance Williams, David Thibodaux, Rudy Sparks and Terry Dover.
A series of nine-hole matches between the teams Saturday consisted of scramble matches, four-ball matches and Scottish twosome matches.
The culmination of the AGA Cup will be 18-hole individual stroke play matches Sunday.
For each match played, points are awarded for winning a match or tying a match. The team with the most points after the two days of play will be the champion team for 2015.
The governing committee for the AGA consists of President David Levingston, Vice President David Burch, Secretary/Treasurer Rob Radtke and Tournament Committee member Doug Streety.
Any golfer can join the Atchafalaya Golf Association. The annual fee is $30 for Atchafalaya Golf Course pass holders and $40 for non-pass holders.
The 2016 AGA tournament schedule will be released soon. Golfers interested in joining the AGA should contact any members of the governing committee or Ed Selser, director of Golf, at The Atchafalaya at Idlewild.
