Morgan City wins district tournament

Morgan City and St. Mary Central qualified for the Louisiana Dixie Youth 2015 AA State Tournament after finishing first and second, respectively, at
the district tournament.
Morgan City finished 4-1 in the district tournament, suffering its only loss in its tournament finale to Patterson, 12-11.
However, a game before, Morgan City had clinched the district tournament.
“The kids played great,” Morgan City coach Andrew Mancuso said. “They’re real excited about going to state.”
Mancuso commended his team for how they handled close games and for how they dealt with the heat and rain delays.
He also thanked Patterson for hosting the tournament and the Morgan City Recreation Department for their assistance in organizing the event.
St. Mary Central finished second in the tournament with a 3-2 mark.
“We played some good tough baseball,” St. Mary Central coach Mark Nini said. “(Team) really came around on Saturday and played some good strong baseball, started hitting the ball well and cut down on errors, so we’re really happy about going to state.”
Morgan City started the weekend off with a 5-4 victory against St. Mary Central.
Morgan City took a 1-0 lead after three innings and led 2-1 after four innings.
While St. Mary Central took a 4-2 lead after five innings, Morgan City came back with three runs in the sixth for the win.
Shamus LaCoste led Morgan City with a run, while Greg Hamer, Brandon Cordero and Ja’Kavior Kemp each scored a run.
Against Thibodaux Americans, Morgan City scored three runs in the first, five in the third and three more in the fourth.
Thibodaux plated its lone run in the fourth.
Case, Roderick Bennet and Cordero each scored two runs, while Hamer, Jade Oliney, Thomas Mancuso, Ja’Kavior Kemp and Lucas Pickens all
scored a run.
Against Patterson, Morgan City fell behind 5-0 after the first inning and trailed 6-1 in the second.
Morgan City, however, clawed its way back into the contest with a run in the third, and five more in the fourth to take a 7-6 lead heading into the fifth.
Each team scored two in the fifth inning, giving Morgan City a 9-8 advantage heading into the final frame.
While Morgan City scored two more run in the sixth, Patterson put up four for the 12-11 victory.
Mancuso led Morgan City with three runs, while Case, Bennett, Kyle Stansbury, Oliney, Bodie Hoffpauir, Carter Whipple, Kemp and Pickens
each scored a run.
In St. Mary Central’s loss to Morgan City Friday, Thomas Nini led St. Mary Central with a 3-for-3 performance with an RBI, while Grant White was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Kaleb Leonard, 2-for-3 with two runs.
Other top offensive contributors included Henry Thorguson, 1-for-3, an RBI; Zac Kitchen, 1-for-3; Lane Rogers and Austin Davis, each 1-for-2 with a run; and Jason Matthews and Ian Thorguson, each 1-for-2.
In St. Mary Central’s win Saturday against Patterson, Leonard finished 3-for-3 with a double and two runs to lead St. Mary Central, while Kitchen was
3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs.
Other top offensive contributors included Nini, 2-for-3, a triple, two RBIs and two runs;
Matthews, 2-for-3, a double, an RBI and two runs; Henry Thorguson, 2-for-3, an RBI and two runs; Drake Rock, 2-for-3, a double and two RBIs; White, 1-for-3, an RBI and a run; Eli Lodrigue, 1-for-3, an RBI; Rogers, 1-for-2, a double and a run;
Davis, 1-for-2, a run; and Ian Thorguson and Maddox Brinlee, each 1-for-3.
In its final game of the district tournament, St. Mary Central rolled past Thibodaux 13-2.
Matthews and Leonard led St. Mary Central as each finished 3-for-3. Mathews had an RBI and a run, while Leonard had two runs.
Other top offensive contributors included Henry Thorguson and Nini, each 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs; Lodrigue, 2-for-3, an RBI and a run; Rogers, 2-for-2, two RBIs; Ian Thorguson, 2-for-3, two runs; Rock, 1-for-3, two RBIs and two runs; Brinlee, 1-for-3, two RBIs; and Kitchen, 1-for-3, an RBI.
For Patterson, in the win against Morgan City, Dylan Richard, Evan Picou, Brylon Jennings and Billy Jack Caldwell each scored two runs.
Other top offensive contributors included Zack Landry, Holden LeBlanc, VJ Byrd and Brayden Mouton, each a run.
In Patterson’s loss against St. Mary Central, Picou finished 2-for-2 to lead the team while Richard was 1-for-2 with a run.
Other top offensive contributors included Caldwell, Ethyn Cauley, Parker Jennings and Landry, all 1-for-2.
