Norwood anchors Team USA to gold in the 4x400-meter relay

Vernon Norwood anchored Team USA to a title in the 4x400-meter relay at the IAAF World Indoor Championships Sunday at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland.
Norwood, a 2011 Morgan City High School graduate and the U.S. indoor champion this year in the 400-meter run, ran a 44.92 split to cap the United States' winning relay in 3:02.45. The relay time is the third fastest indoors and 0.33 seconds off Team USA's 4x400-meter relay mark it set two years ago.
Norwood was joined on the relay by Kyle Clemons, Calvin Smith and Chris Giesting. Clemons ran the first leg in 46.47, followed by Smith's 45.66 split on the second leg. Geisting ran 45.34 before handing the baton to Norwood.
The Bahamas finished second in 3:04.75, while Trinidad and Tobago finished third in 3:05.51.
The United States advanced to the finals after winning the second of two heats Saturday in 3:05.41. The U.S. team of Elvyonn Bailey, Smith, Giesting and Patrick Feeney ran the heat for the United States, which had the fastest time among the seven teams in the two heats.
The title certainly ended the world competition on a positive note for Norwood after a rough start. Norwood, on Friday, was disqualified in his 400-meter heat due to a lane violation, the Associated Press reported.
The United States finished the competition with a record 23 medals. Of those, 13 were gold.
