Berwick rolls past Thibodaux
MORGAN CITY — The Berwick High School Bowling team eased past Thibodaux High School 26-1 in prep bowling action Wednesday at Charlie’s Lanes.
Berwick’s high bowler was William Ledford, who recorded a 233.
Other top games turned in by the Panthers included Mark Lemoine, who bowled games of 200 and 206; Blake Bergeron at 204; and Aaron Barrilleaux at 210.
Berwick boys were in action Monday when its boys played Houma Christian and its girls faced H.L. Bourgeois, both at Creole Lanes in Houma.
Both teams will return to action Wednesday when they face Morgan City in boys’ and girls’ action at Charlie’s Lanes at 3:40 p.m.
Superdome manager slated for five-year contract extension
BATON ROUGE — The private company that manages the Superdome and Smoothie King Center in New Orleans is in line for a contract renewal through 2022.
The Interim Emergency Board — a panel of lawmakers and other state officials — agreed Monday to the five-year contract extension. The action also must win approval from lawmakers through mailed ballot.
Ron Forman, chairman of the Louisiana Stadium and Exposition District, said SMG is taking a $300,000 annual cut in fees and will pay $5 million toward facility improvements under the new deal.
SMG’s fees grow up to 4 percent annually, slated to reach $1.7 million by 2017. The contract extension will drop the 2017 payment to $1.4 million, with growth up to 2 percent annually thereafter.
SMG has held the contract for nearly 40 years.
Alabama St. holds Southern to 3 points in OT; wins 63-59
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Jamel Waters scored 18 points with eight rebounds and Alabama State held Southern to three points in overtime for a 63-59 win Monday night.
Waters made two free throws with 3:02 left in regulation to give Alabama State a 56-53 lead.
Southern’s Adrian Rodgers tied the game with a 3-pointer with 57 seconds remaining and neither team made another shot, forcing overtime.
Rodgers made a basket at the 3:03 mark of overtime for a 59-57 lead, but the Jaguars went scoreless the rest of the way.
Wendell Lewis had 15 points and 10 rebounds to help Alabama State (11-5, 7-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) win its eighth straight game. Waters was 4 of 17 from the field but went 9 of 10 from the free throw line.
Rodgers finished with 21 points for Southern (9-13, 6-2). The Jaguars had their five-game winning streak snapped.
Incarnate Word uses big second half to slip past McNeese St.
SAN ANTONIO — Mitchell Badillo’s driving layup with two seconds left helped Incarnate Word overcome a 12-point halftime deficit and beat McNeese State 86-84 Monday.
McNeese State’s Kevin Hardy made two free throws with 12 seconds left, tying the game at 84, before Badillo’s winner.
Jontrell Walker scored 24 and Denzel Livingston added 22 for Incarnate Word (11-5, 3-3 Southland Conference), which shot 1 of 12 from 3-point range in the first half.
McNeese State (7-11, 1-6) made 20 of 30 first-half field goals and led 46-32 at the break.
Badillo had a 3-pointer and a three-point play, and Walker made two 3s during a 14-6 run to open the second half, which pulled Incarnate Word within 52-48.
A layup by Badillo gave the Cardinals an 80-79 advantage, their first since leading 7-6, with 2:58 left.
Desharick Guidry led the Cowboys, who shot a season-high 61 percent from the field, with 26 points.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beat Southeastern Louisiana 70-61
HAMMOND — Rashawn Thomas scored a season-high 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds to help Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beat Southeastern Louisiana 70-61 Monday night.
Thomas hit two free throws with 40 seconds left to extend Texas A&M-CC’s lead to 67-60.
Thomas was 10 of 13 from the free throw line and his teammates were just 9 of 20.
John Jordan made seven of his 13 shots and had 18 points for Texas A&M-CC (11-8, 6-1 Southland Conference).
Onochie Ochie led SE Louisiana (5-14, 2-4) with 15 points and eight rebounds. Daniel Grieves had 14 points and Zay Jackson 13. The Lions were just 2 of 26 from beyond the arc.
Ochie’s three-point play capped SE Louisiana’s 9-2 run for a 50-48 lead with 10:01 left, but Jordan answered with one of his own to start a 9-0 run.
New Orleans handles winless Central Arkansas 87-67
NEW ORLEANS — Kevin Brown scored 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting and New Orleans handled winless Central Arkansas 87-67 Monday.
New Orleans (6-10, 2-5 Southland) shot 60 percent from the floor and was 18 of 33 from the line. Brown made 4 of 5 of his 3-point attempts. Kevin Hill added 18 points and nine boards, Terrance Syon had 13 points and Christavious Gill ended with 10.
New Orleans scored the first 13 points of the game and led by as many as 19 before heading into intermission with a 50-33 lead.
Jordan Howard led Central Arkansas (0-18, 0-7) with 16 points, Mathieu Kamba came off the bench for 12, Thatch Unruh added 11 and Boo Milligan was 8 of 10 from the line and finished with 10 points.
The Bears hold the nation’s second-longest losing streak this season.
Northwestern State rolls past Nicholls 80-51
NATCHITOCHES — Ta’Jon Welcome scored 18 points on Monday and Northwestern State steadily built on a 16-point halftime lead to beat Nicholls State 80-51.
Welcome also had seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks for the Demons (10-9, 5-3 Southland), who had their largest lead at 78-45 with 4:22 to play.
Nicholls (5-12, 2-5) used an 8-0 run to get within 47-35 early in the second half, but Northwestern State answered with its own 8-0 run and led by no less than 17 from there.
Zeek Woodley added 13 points, Sabri Thompson scored 11 and Matt Killian 10 for the Demons. Jalan West handed out nine assists.
Ja’Dante’ Frye had 11 points and Liam Thomas scored 10 to lead the Colonels.
Nicholls scored seven straight after falling behind 20-9, but Northwestern State quickly pushed its lead back into double digits and scored five straight to close the half up 41-25.
