St. Mary Pony 14s win super region tourney

Pitching was pretty spot on this weekend from our kids.

The St. Mary Pony 14-year-old All-Stars won the Pony 14 & Under Super Region Tournament after Arnaudville, a team St. Mary had dominated already in the tournament, forfeited in the championship game to St. Mary.
St. Mary, as well as Arnaudville and Loreauville, all advance to the Pony 14 & Under Section Tournament that will begin Tuesday in Youngsville.
St. Mary coach Patrick Wiley said he thought what impressed him the most from this weekend was their squad’s pitching.
“Pitching was pretty spot on this weekend from our kids,” said Wiley, who also noted that his defense committed just one error.
He also said the team’s hitting and base running also were good.
In Saturday’s semifinal contest, St. Mary defeated Arnaudville 17-0 in five innings.
The win was the team’s second of the tournament. After St. Mary received a first-round bye, they run-ruled Loreauville 16-4 in five innings to advance to the semifinal contest against Arnaudville.
Even though they won the tournament, Wiley said that there is no advantage at the section tournament, which also will be held in Youngsville beginning Tuesday.
Kyle Boudreaux earned the win for St. Mary. In four innings, he tossed a no-hitter with seven strikeouts and four walks.
Kyle Pitre pitched the fifth inning and surrendered a walk and fanned one.
Joel Singleton led St. Mary offensively with a 2-for-3 performance with four RBIs and two runs, while Pitre was 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs and Reid Wiley, 2-for-3, three runs.
Other contributors included Patrick Robertson, 1-for-4, three RBIs and two runs; Caleb Bernard, 1-for-3, an RBI and two runs; Zachery Miller 1-for-3, two RBIs; Cade Thibodeaux, 1-for-1, an RBI and a run; Hayden Pinho, 1-for-1, a run; Lukas Carnley, an RBI and two runs; and Kyle Boudreaux, a run.
On Tuesday, St. Mary will begin play against BYYA at 6 p.m.
While his team will have a quick turnaround from the Super Region tournament, Wiley said he likes that his squad will get to keep playing.
“I think it’s good because fortunately we’re hot right now,” he said. “Hopefully, we can stay hot as far as our bats go.”
While he agreed that pitching will be important at the next level, he agreed that hitting will be more important to overcome any errors on defense because pitching will naturally give up runs because the quality of competition is better.
“If you can outhit those errors, everything else will take care of itself,” he said.
As a coach of the Pony 14s a year ago, Wiley said he is familiar with the Crowley team, which he said has made it to the zone tournament the past four years.
“They were pretty dominant,” Wiley said of last year’s Crowley team, which of course will feature different team members this year. “They run-ruled everybody they played last year. … They were on fire last year.”
