A kitchen fire Wednesday at Villa Apartments caused heavy damage to one apartment and smoke damage to two other apartments, and one firefighter received minor injuries, Morgan City Assistant Fire Chief John Price said.
Firefighters received the call at 11:23 a.m. Wednesday reporting a fire at Villa Apartments in the 500 block of Roderick Street, Price said.
The fire unit arrived on scene at 11:25 a.m. with heavy smoke showing from an apartment, he said. The apartment had heavy fire inside the apartment as well, Price said.
With the wind blowing, firefighters put the fire out quickly and prevented the fire from spreading, Price said. The Morgan City Fire Department called in “all available manpower” after the initial call reporting the fire due to the size of the building, Price said. A total of 30 on-duty and off-duty personnel responded to help fight the fire.
The apartment where the fire started sustained heavy fire damage. The two apartments on both sides sustained smoke damage. Firefighters believe the fire started in the kitchen area on the stove, Price said.
One firefighter received minor injuries, but no one inside the apartments at the time the fire started was injured, Price said. Acadian Ambulance checked everyone on scene to make sure they were all right, he said.
The last fire truck cleared the scene at 1:08 p.m.
