Toys for Tots collections in St. Mary Parish are going well, according to Bill Goessl, St. Mary Detachment Toys for Tots coordinator.
Elijah Cuvillier, 6, of Bayou Vista, made donations Saturday to the first Stuff the Army Truck event supporting Toys for Tots in St. Mary Parish. St. Mary Detachment 600 of the Marine Corps League paired with Walmart in Bayou Vista to host the event. Every year the Toys for Tots campaign helps more than 1,300 St. Mary Parish children have a happy Christmas. With Cuvillier is David Martin, commandant of St. Mary Detachment 600. Two companies are joining with Toys for Tots to provide a happy Christmas for local children.
The Marine Corps League, St. Mary Detachment held its 14th annual poker run Saturday. The event also served as the organization’s kickoff for its annual Toys for Tots drive. Riders who participated in the poker run could either donate their entry fee to be used for the Toys for Tots drive or the area detachment of the Marine Corps League, which will help with operational expenses, according to David Martin, commandant for the area Marine Corps’ detachment. As part of their entry fee, riders were required to bring an unwrapped toy for the Toys for Tots drive. Also, plate lunches were sold later in the day, which benefitted the Marine Corps League’s yearly operational expenses, Martin said. The Toys for Tots drive will continue until Christmas Day. Bins will be located at various businesses throughout the area including most banks and dollar stores. All toys collected will stay in St. Mary Parish and will be distributed to youngsters, Martin said.
