Second teen charged in raccoon killings

A Patterson teen was arrested Tuesday and accused of abetting another teen in killing two raccoons in December 2015 at The Atchafalaya at Idlewild golf course near Patterson, St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert said in a news release.
—Kenneth Singleton Jr., 18, of the 1500 block of Main Street in Patterson, was arrested at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday on a warrant charging him with principal for aggravated cruelty to animals.
A detective investigating a complaint of animal cruelty collected evidence indicating that Singleton abetted in the killing of two raccoons at the Atchafalaya at Idlewild golf course Dec. 11, 2015, Hebert said. The detective obtained a warrant for his arrest and he turned himself in at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center. Singleton was released on $2,500 personal surety bail.
Singleton is the second arrest in the case. Bryce Beaubouef, 18, of the 800 block of Main Street in Patterson, was arrested Dec. 18, 2015, on a warrant for aggravated cruelty to animals. A detective investigating a complaint of animal cruelty collected video showing evidence that Beaubouef killed two raccoons at the Atchafalaya Golf Course at Idlewild Dec. 11, 2015, Hebert said. Additional evidence indicates that Beaubouef used a blunt object to strike the two animals, killing them, Hebert said.
A complainant submitted a video, which had been posted to the social media site Snapchat, to the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office on Dec. 11. It depicted the killing of two raccoons, The Daily Review previously reported.
The sheriff’s office confirmed that two teens were involved with the video. Landry didn’t disclose details about what the video shows because it is evidence in the case, The Daily Review reported in December.
Hebert reported the following arrests in east St. Mary Parish:
—Nicholas Grimmett, 34, of the 100 block of South Verret Street in Amelia, at 9:19 a.m. Tuesday on a warrant charging him with simple battery. A deputy investigating a complaint of a battery learned that Grimmett punched a male victim during an argument at a residence in Bayou Vista. Grimmett turned himself in at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center. Grimmett was released on $500 bail.
—Keith Robinson, 36, of the 400 block of Verdun Lane in Verdunville, at 11:01 a.m. Tuesday on a warrant charging him with simple battery. A deputy investigating a complaint of a battery collected statements indicating that Robinson struck a female victim at a residence in Centerville. Robinson turned himself in at the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office in Franklin. Robinson was released on $500 bail.
—Kyle Rhett, 24, of the 600 block of Leo Street in Patterson, at 11:11 a.m. Tuesday on a warrant for issuing worthless checks. Rhett was incarcerated at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center in Centerville when a jailer located the active warrant. No bail is set.
—Marvin Blackmon Sr., 62, of the 7200 block of La. 182 in Morgan City, at 7:55 p.m. Tuesday on a warrant for failure to comply with the terms and conditions of drug court. Blackmon turned himself in at the parish jail. Bail is set at $100,000.
—Brian J. Fitter, 34, of the 700 block of Kelli Drive in Patterson, at 12:33 a.m. today on a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of angling without a license. A deputy investigating a suspicious vehicle parked on Cotten Road in the Patterson area made contact with Fitter and located the active warrant for his arrest. No bail is set.
—Lucille Gussman, 35, of the 700 block of Terrebonne Street in Morgan City, at 8:42 p.m. Monday on the charges of possession of Schedule II methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of a counterfeit controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute and obstruction of justice.
—John Walsh, 35, of the 300 block of Railroad Avenue in Morgan City, at 8:42 p.m. Monday on the charges of obstruction of justice, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a counterfeit controlled dangerous substance, resisting an officer by giving false information and on two warrants for failure to comply with terms and conditions of drug court.
A detective with the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division observed a vehicle driving onto the shoulder of the U.S. 90 bridge in Morgan City and conducted a traffic stop on Everett Street. While advising the driver of the reason for being stopped, the detective observed a rear passenger attempt to conceal something in his hand, Hebert said.
The detective told the subject to stop moving around. As the detective continued to speak with the driver, the passenger, later identified as Walsh, began to reach down near the door and seat, Hebert said. Walsh was then asked to step out of the vehicle and was patted down for officer safety.
The detective located a small straw consistent with the use of illegal drugs. The detective also observed several small pieces of a suspected illegal drug scattered on the rear passenger seat and floorboard where Walsh had been seated. Walsh was detained pending further investigation.
Another rear passenger seated near the suspected illegal substance was also detained. That passenger was identified as Gussman. The detective received consent to search the vehicle and retrieved the suspected drug, Hebert said.
The detective learned that the substance found in the vehicle was bath salts and that Walsh and Gussman were selling the substance as meth, Hebert said. The detective also determined that Walsh had initially given a false name and that he was wanted on drug court warrants.
As the investigation progressed, methamphetamine was located on Gussman, Hebert said. Both suspects were jailed with no bail set.
Morgan City Police Chief James Blair reported the following arrests:
—Aketa R Francis, 19, of Egle Street in Morgan City, at 2 p.m. Tuesday on a warrant charging her with disturbing the peace.
Francis, already incarcerated in the Morgan City Police Department Jail on previous charges, was booked on an additional warrant obtained by the Morgan City Police Department. The warrant was in regards to an incident which occurred Dec. 28, 2015, when Francis was suspected to have been involved in a fight in the area of Egle Street.
—Paul Stevens, 39, of Eustace, Texas, at 5:23 p.m. Tuesday on the charges of criminal trespassing and disturbing the peace intoxicated.
Officers responded to a home on La. 182 in regards to a disturbance. Officers spoke with the complainant who told officers that Stevens was inside the complainant’s home and was told to leave but refused to do so, Blair said.
Officers spoke with Stevens, who appeared intoxicated, Blair said. Stevens was jailed.
—Kendrick D. Fontenot, 34, of Franklin, at 8:10 p.m. Tuesday on a warrant charging him with violation of a protective order and two warrants charging him with simple assault.
Fontenot was transported from the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Department Law Enforcement Center to the Morgan City Police Department Jail in regards to three warrants held for Fontenot by the Morgan City Police Department. Fontenot was jailed.
—Saavedra Rodriguez, 32, of Amelia, at 8:34 p.m. Tuesday on the charges of no driver’s license, speeding and careless operation of a motor vehicle.
An officer observed a vehicle traveling on Brashear Avenue speeding and driving in a reckless manner. Police conducted a traffic stop and identified Rodriguez as the driver. Rodriguez could not produce a valid driver’s license and was jailed.
—Joseph L. Hart, 33, of Versen Street in Berwick, at 2:36 a.m. today on a warrant charging him with domestic abuse battery and a Rayne Police Department warrant charging him with expired inspection sticker.
Hart was identified by officers as an occupant of a vehicle during a traffic investigation. A warrant checked revealed that the Morgan City Police Department and Rayne Police Department held active warrants for Hart. Hart was jailed.
—Deqwavia J. Hall, 29, of Versen Street in Berwick, at 2:36 a.m. today on the charge of domestic abuse battery.
Hall was identified by officers as an occupant in a vehicle during a traffic investigation. A warrants check revealed that the Morgan City Police Department held an active warrant for Hall. Hall was jailed.
Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported no arrests.
