Sheriff investigating death of Centerville man; 'Circumstances are suspicious,' spokeswoman says

The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a 25-year-old Centerville man whose body was found Monday in the Intracoastal Waterway in Amelia after being reported missing Sunday, according to a St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office news release.
At 3:30 p.m. Sunday, the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office received a report of a missing person. Detectives began an investigation into the whereabouts of Nevis Sterling, 25, of Centerville. Sterling’s family contacted the Sheriff’s Office after locating his car at the Deli Mart on La. 182 in Verdunville, the release said.
At 4:26 p.m. Monday, the Sheriff’s Office received information that workers on a tug boat on the Intracoastal Waterway located a body in the water near a business in the 8000 block of La. 182 in Amelia, the release stated. The St. Mary Parish Coroner’s Office was contacted and identified the deceased as Sterling, the release said.
“The circumstances are definitely suspicious,” Sheriff’s Office Spokeswoman Traci Landry said of the death.
Detectives are investigating the death, and autopsy results are pending, the release said.
