Sheriff: K-9 finds marijuana

A 19-year-old Berwick man was caught with marijuana Wednesday after a traffic stop in Amelia during which a St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy called for the assistance of Morgan City Police’s K-9 unit, Sheriff Mark Hebert said in a news release.
—Joshua Miller, 19, of the 700 block of Boudreaux Street in Berwick, was arrested at 11:44 p.m. Wednesday on the charges of tail lights required, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. A deputy assigned to patrol Amelia conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that had no passenger side brake light.
The deputy made contact with the driver, Miller, and smelled the strong odor of burning marijuana coming from the vehicle, Hebert said. The deputy called for the assistance of the Morgan City K-9 unit.
The K-9 officer alerted the deputy to the presence of illegal drugs on the driver’s side of the vehicle, Hebert said. The deputy located a plastic bag containing a small amount of marijuana in the driver’s side door, Hebert said. The deputy also located cigars used to smoke the marijuana, the sheriff said. Following the investigation, Miller was released on a summons to appear in court Oct. 14.
Hebert reported responding to 41 complaints in the parish and reported the following arrests in east St. Mary Parish:
—Kayla Comeaux, 27, of the 100 block of Moffett Court in Morgan City, at 2:16 p.m. Wednesday on three warrants for failure to comply with the terms and conditions of drug court. Comeaux was transported from the Assumption Parish jail to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center on the warrants. Bail is set at $300,000.
—Leanna Gresco, 24, of the 7100 block of La. 70 in Stephensville, at 4:01 p.m. Wednesday on a warrant for failure to appear on the charges of direct contempt, speeding and failure to honor written promise to appear.
Gresco came to the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office in Morgan City in reference to a separate investigation. While speaking with Gresco, an active warrant for her arrest was located. Gresco was booked and later released with a $335 fine.
Morgan City Police Chief James Blair reported the following arrests:
—Burnell A. Narcisse, 49, of Trevino Street in Berwick, at 11:25 a.m. Wednesday on a warrant charging him with three counts of failure to pay fines.
Narcisse was transported from the Berwick Police Department to the Morgan City Police Department for an outstanding warrant held for the 6th Ward City Court. He was jailed.
—Areana Candanedo, 24, of La. 182 in Morgan City, at 1:13 p.m. Wednesday on a warrant charging her with two counts of failure to pay fines.
Candanedo turned herself in on outstanding warrants held for the 6th Ward City Court. She was jailed.
—Ashraf N. Khalil, 35, of Houma, at 8:11 p.m. Wednesday on a Terrebonne Parish warrant for contempt of court.
Officers located Khalil in the area of La. 182 near Justa Street. Officers determined he held an outstanding warrant for Terrebonne Parish. He was transported to the Morgan City Police Department and jailed.
—Lendell A. Riles, 25, of Cherry Street in Patterson, at 1:14 a.m. today on the charges of headlights required and driver’s license suspended.
A patrol officer in the area of La. 182 and Seventh Street observed a vehicle with improper lighting. The vehicle was stopped and the driver, Riles, was found to have a suspended driver’s license, Blair said. Riles was jailed and later released on bail.
Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported no arrests.
Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported no arrests.
